About us

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. By burning fossil, finite raw materials the earth heats up visibly. This makes the energy turnaround indispensable. The Paris climate protection agreement of 2015 envisages limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius if possible.

Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH recognized the urgency of energy storage and resulting alternative energy carriers and sources early on. Already since 1998, it has been brilliantly fulfilling its pioneering role in the development and implementation of CleanTech innovations for an energetic circular economy.

To combat climate change, the Proton Motor team wants to help shape the world of tomorrow today by means of regenerative energy solutions in the stationary and mobility sectors. By producing and launching emission-free hydrogen fuel cells with Made in Germany quality, we are paving the way to the green future.

The daily motivation of our employees is to offer customers sustainable hydrogen fuel cell brand products that are always one step ahead of the times and at the same time synchronized with the order. Hydrogen represents a significant factor in the success of climate neutrality, with climate-friendly transformation embedded in the challenge of energy dependence. Proton Motor assesses the associated strengthening of hydrogen in this regard as instrumental in achieving the climate targets.

Our history

1998

Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH was founded on January 1, 1998 from “Magnet-Motor GmbH”, which had already existed since 1994.

2001

Commissioning of the world’s first fuel cell-powered forklift truck at Munich Airport.

2006

IPO of Proton Motor Power Systems plc as parent company of Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH on the AIM market (Alternative Investment Market) of the London Stock Exchange (Code Stock Exchange (Code: PPS).

2007

Relocation of Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH from Starnberg to Puchheim near Munich. The world’s first triple hybrid forklift truck was also unveiled as part of the opening ceremony for the company’s new headquarters.

2008

Within the EU-funded Zemship project, the world’s first fuel cell-powered passenger ferry “Alsterwasser” was built. Until 2014, the 50 kW Proton Motor fuel cell provided emission-free and silent transport for tourists in the Port of Hamburg.

2009

Proton Motor and Škoda Electric a.s. present the world’s first city bus with Triple Hybrid® propulsion system, consisting of batteries, supercaps and fuel cells.

Expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure at the company headquarters in Puchheim with a hydrogen tank.

Presentation of the world’s first electric commercial vehicle powered in parallel by battery and fuel cell in the weight class from 7.5 to 12 tons.

2014

World record drive from Munich to Berlin with the electric 7.5t truck Newton, equipped with the HyRange® hydrogen fuel cell system for range extension.

2015

Signing of the cooperation agreement between Proton Motor and DB Bahnbau Group to install fuel cell-based uninterruptible emergency power systems in the railroad sector.

2015

Expansion of the product range to include battery UPS systems and solar battery storage systems through the integration of Spower GmbH.

World’s first energy self-sufficient apartment building in Switzerland, which is powered by self-produced hydrogen from solar electricity and a fuel cell from Proton Motor.

2017

Delivery of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant as a container solution to supply energy to parts of the port in Orkney, Scotland.

2018

Anniversary celebration “20 years Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH”.

2019

Cooperation agreement with Škoda Electric a.s. for cooperation in the development, sale and maintenance of fuel cell electric buses.

2019

Commissioning of the “Fit-4-AMandA” stack manufacturing robot to increase production capacity to up to 5,000 fuel cell units per year.

2020

Record first quarter with order intake of EUR 6.4 million.

2020

On-schedule delivery of the APEX Group order for the new hydrogen power plant in Rostock-Laage despite the global corona situation.

2021

To the Austrian customer “Linsinger Maschinen Gesellschaft mbH” with its world novelty of the hydrogen rail milling train, Proton Motor delivered the customized fuel cell system “HyRail” with 214 kW installed power, consisting of two fully redundant systems of 107 kW each, in summer 2021.

For the energy company “Shell”, Proton Motor was able to bring the order for the product innovation development of the grid-autonomous hydrogen fuel cell power plant “HyShelter 240” to a successful finalization in the fall of 2021.

For the largest European shipbuilding group “Fincantieri S.p.A.” based in Trieste, two fully redundant “HyShip 72” product designs were primarily adapted for the power supply of the electric drive train and other consumers on board the “ZEUS” ship (Zero Emission Ultimate Ship).

Proton Motor Fuel Cell adjusts branded product portfolio: Consolidation under new Hy brand strengthens fuel cell product family.

The British parent company “Proton Motor Power Systems plc” of “Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH” has signed a fifteen-year lease for a modern 13,500 m² production facility. This additional site is to be used successively from the second quarter of 2023 to significantly expand the company’s manufacturing and testing capacities.

Proton Motor has over 25 years of experience in developing power solutions using CleanTech technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells, fuel cell and hybrid systems with a zero carbon footprint. Based in Puchheim near Munich, Proton Motor develops and produces both standard products and customized solutions. Proton Motor’s focus is on stationary solutions, as well as mobile, maritime and rail applications. The product portfolio consists of basic fuel cell systems, standard complete systems, and customer-specific systems.
Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Proton Motor Power Systems plc. The company has been listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange since October 2006 (code: PPS).
